Why Zeta Construction

What you get with Zeta Construction

  1. 1

    Planned with the pool

Deck size, slope, drains and coping are set with the pool, and the enclosure footer and the kitchen pad are part of the same layout.

  2. 2

    Built from the base up

We excavate, compact the base in layers and set an edge restraint before the first paver goes down. That is what keeps a deck level.

  3. 3

    Water goes away

The deck slopes away from the pool and the house, with drains where the yard needs them, so rain does not pool or wash out the base.

  4. 4

    Fix what you have

We relevel sunken areas, replace cracked pavers, reseal, and resurface worn concrete decks with pavers or a new coating.

Construction sequence

How your deck is built

Most of a good deck is the part you never see. These are the stages of a new paver or travertine deck.

  1. Stage 1

    Layout & design

Deck outline, pattern, borders and slope drawn on your survey, with the drains and buried lines located.

  2. Stage 2

    Excavation & grading

Soil or the old deck comes out to the design depth, graded for the slope.

  3. Stage 3

    Compacted base

Base material is placed and compacted in layers, so the deck has a firm, even bed.

  4. Stage 4

    Edge restraint & bedding

The edge restraint is set to hold the pavers in place, and the bedding layer is screeded level.

  5. Stage 5

    Pavers & cuts

Pavers or travertine are laid in the pattern and cut clean at the coping, the drains and the edges.

  6. Stage 6

    Joints & sealing

The surface is compacted, joint sand is swept in, and the sealer goes on if you choose one.

Pavers and pool decks in Tampa Bay & Florida’s West Coast

The deck frames the pool, carries the furniture and the enclosure, and takes the sun all day. It has to stay level, drain fast and feel good under bare feet. Zeta Construction builds paver and travertine decks as part of the pool, and patios, walkways and driveways for the rest of the home.

Built from the base up

Most deck problems start below the surface. Pavers sink when the base is thin or loose, when water runs under them, or when the edges have nothing to hold them. We excavate to the right depth, compact the base in layers, set an edge restraint and slope the deck away from the pool and the house. Drains go where the yard needs them. Then the pavers are laid, cut clean at the coping and the drains, and locked in with joint sand.

Planned with the pool and the enclosure

When we build your custom pool, the deck is designed with it: the coping, the steps to the yard, the screen enclosure footer and the pad for an outdoor kitchen. Gas, water and electrical lines run under the deck before the pavers go down, so nothing has to be lifted later. Travertine stays cooler underfoot. Concrete pavers offer more colors and patterns at a lower cost. We bring samples so you can see both in your own yard.

Patios, driveways and repairs

Not building a pool? We also build paver patios, walkways and driveways, and we fix decks that already exist. That means releveling sunken areas, replacing cracked pavers, cleaning and resealing, and resurfacing worn concrete pool decks with pavers or a new coating. If the pool needs work too, see pool renovations. For the full backyard, from the deck to the cover, see outdoor living.

FAQ

Pavers & Pool Decks: questions we hear

Pavers or travertine for a pool deck?

Both work well around a pool. Concrete pavers come in many colors, shapes and patterns and usually cost less. Travertine is a natural stone that stays cooler underfoot and has a softer look. We bring samples to your yard so you can compare them in your own light.

Why are my pavers sinking?

Usually because the base was too thin or not compacted, water is running under the deck, or the edges have no restraint. Tree roots can also lift pavers. We lift the area, fix the cause, rebuild the base and relay the same pavers when they are in good condition.

Can you put pavers over my existing concrete pool deck?

Often, yes. If the concrete is sound, a paver or travertine overlay can be installed on top of it. We check the cracks, the drainage and the height at the doors and the coping first. If the slab is cracked or moving, it should come out before the new deck goes in.

Do pavers need to be sealed?

It is not required. A sealer helps resist stains, holds the joint sand in place and can deepen the color. It wears with sun and traffic and has to be reapplied over time, and around a pool it should be a product suited for wet, barefoot areas.

Do I need a permit or HOA approval?

A new pool deck is part of the pool permit. Driveways, and some patios, may need a permit or a right-of-way approval depending on the city or county. In a community with an HOA, approval of the design and colors is common. We check all of it before we start.
